In Friday’s post
I included a chart that showed the relative increase in deaths during 2021-22 (post vax) vs 2018-19 (pre-Covid) by county in OH & FL vs. several factors:
% of votes for Trump (not including 3rd party candidates)
Median Household Income
% of Population Series Complete of vaccination (i.e. at least 1 dose J&J or 2 of mRNA vaccines)
% of Adults who smoke
The chart I showed did not label the factors:
Now for the reveal:
To summarize, in terms of correlation with increase of post-vax availability deaths we have the following:
Florida: Most correlated to least… Median Household Income (poorer people’s deaths increased more), % Vaccinated, % Smokers, % Trump Voters
Ohio: % smokers, Median Household Income, %Vaccinated, % Trump Voters
Note that all of these factors are correlated with each other (i.e. counties that vote heavily for Trump also tend to have higher rates of smoking, higher rates of vaccination, and lower household incomes). The fact that in both states neither vaccination rates nor Trump voting has the highest correlation with increased deaths should kill any simplistic arguments that folks make claiming that politics & vaccination were the key factors in outcomes of the last few years. It’s quite clear from the data that poorer areas fared worse than wealthier areas during COVID and it’s aftermath. Perhaps it has something to do with how all the “emergency” policies enacted were geared in a way that minimized the cost to the wealthy, laptop class, and put undue burden on the working class.
For those under 75 the study actually found Republicans were LESS likely to die than Democrats. Excess Republican deaths only occurred in those over 75.
Thanks for your work.
